IMMC11

The International Medicinal Mushroom Conference (IMMC) is one of the most influential large-scale events in the global edible and medicinal mushroom industry. With its high standard, professionalism and internationality, it is known as the “Olympics of the edible and medicinal mushroom industry”.

The conference is a platform for scientists from different countries, regions and generations to learn about new achievements and new methods of edible and medicinal mushrooms. It is a grand event in the field of edible and medicinal mushrooms in the world. Since the first International Medicinal Mushroom Conference was held in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine in 2001, the conference has been held every two years.

From September 27th to 30th, the 11th International Medicinal Mushroom Conference was held in the Crowne Plaza Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. As the leading enterprise in China’s organic Reishi industry and the only domestic sponsor, GanoHerb was invited to participate in this event.

The conference is organized by the International Society for Medicinal Mushrooms and the University of Belgrade and is co-organized by the Faculty of Agriculture- Belgrade, the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković”, the Mycological Society of Serbia, the European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group, the Faculty of Biology-Belgrade, the Faculty of Science-Novi Sad, the Faculty of Natural Science-Kragujevac and the Faculty of Pharmacy-Belgrade. It attracted hundreds of professionals and scientists in the edible and medicinal mushroom research field from China, North America, Europe and Serbia.

The theme of this conference is “Medicinal Mushroom Science: Innovation, Challenges and Perspectives”, with keynote reports, special seminars, poster presentations, and edible and medicinal mushroom industry exhibitions. The conference lasts for 4 days. The representatives gathered together to report and discuss the latest and key academic issues in the field of edible and medicinal mushrooms.

On September 28th, Dr. Ahmed Attia Ahmed Abdelmoaty, who was jointly cultivated by GanoHerb Postdoctoral Research Station and Fujian Medical University, shared the “Senolytic effect of triterpenoids complex NT extracted from Ganoderma lucidum on senescent liver cancer cells” online.

Liver cancer is a common malignant tumor. Cellular senescence is a new hallmark of Cancer included in the cover review of the top journal Cancer Discovery in January this year (Cancer Discov. 2022; 12: 31-46). It plays an important role in the recurrence and chemotherapy resistance of cancer including liver cancer.

Ganoderma lucidum, known as the “magic herb” in China, is a well-known medicinal fungus and traditional Chinese medicine. It is often used to prevent and treat hepatitis, immune system diseases and cancer. The active compounds of Ganoderma lucidum are mainly triterpenoids and polysaccharides, which have the pharmacological activities of hepatoprotection, antioxidation, antitumor, immune regulation and antiangiogenesis. However, there has been no literature report on the senolytic effect of Ganoderma lucidum on senescent cancer cells.

Under the guidance of Professor Jianhua Xu, director of the Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory of Pharmacology of Natural Medicine, School of Pharmacy, Fujian Medical University, researchers at the GanoHerb Postdoctoral Research Station used the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (ADR) to induce liver cancer cell senescence and then treated with Ganoderma lucidum triterpenoid complex NT to analyze its effects on the expression of senescence marker molecules of senescent liver cancer cells, the proportion of senescent cells, the apoptosis and autophagy of senescent cells and the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP).

The study found that Ganoderma lucidum triterpenoid complex NT can reduce the proportion of senescent liver cancer cells and induce apoptosis of senescent liver cancer cells. It can eliminate senescent liver cancer cells and inhibit SASP in senescent liver cancer cells by inhibiting NF-κB, TFEB, P38, ERK and mTOR signaling pathways, especially the inhibition of IL-6, IL-1β and IL-1α.

Ganoderma lucidum triterpenoid complex NT can effectively inhibit the promoting effect of senescent liver cancer cells on the proliferation of surrounding liver cancer cells by eliminating senescent liver cancer cells and can also synergize with the anti-hepatocellular carcinoma effect of sorafenib. These findings have great significance and potential prospects for the study of new antitumor drugs based on anti-cellular senescence.
