Archaeological evidence suggests that Ganoderma has been used as a medicine for at least 6800 years Jul 03, 2018

In May 2018, three research institutes, including China Academy of Chinese Medical Science, China National Center for Nanoscience and Technology, and Cultural Relics and Archaeology Institute of Zhejiang Province, jointly published in the Chinese Science Bulletin, the Origin Archaeology of Ganoderma Lucidum, which confirms that as early as in the Neolithic Age, where agriculture and animal husbandry had just taken shape and the characters had not yet appeared, prehistoric humans living in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River had already used Reishi Mushroom, which conforms to the definition of modern science, as a medical use. Its use time can be traced at least to 6800 years ago.

The Lingzhi sample is found from Tianluo Mountain, an ancient cultural relic in Hemudu. It has been identified as about 6871±44 years ago. It is the earliest sample of Ganoderma lucidum. It is also unearthed with a double bird woodcarving headwear, dishes, jade wares and other witchcraft tools.

In China, ancient witches were also doctors with a high social status. Therefore, this discovery provides a strong evidence for the dual use of Ganoderma lucidum since ancient times in practicing witchcraft (pursuing supernatural ability, such as longevity) and in medical treatment. The history of using reishi has been traced to 6800 years ago, more than 4000 years earlier than the record of Shennong Materia Medica.
